Top Ten Tuesday (8): Top Ten Words/Topics That Instantly Make Me Pick Up or Buy a Book

The topic this week is Top Ten Words/Topics That Instantly Make Me Pick Up or Buy a Book. This topic was a bit of a challenge. At first, I couldn't figure out what the heck I could possibly share! But you know what? I like this topic because it made me sit back and really think about what draws me in. For help, I looked at my recent "Want to Read" clicks on Goodreads... this should get interesting...

Some words/topics that almost always pique my interest include:

1. Hilarious - I can't help myself. I really love books that will make me laugh out loud. There's nothing like reading a book and suddenly busting out some serious laughter... especially when you're not the only one in the room and they look at you like you've totally lost it. Hee hee.

2. Mythology - I'm a sucker for mythology. I just can't help myself! If a book mentions it has mythology in it, I can't resist. The only thing is I can't decide if I'm more interested in myths I'm familiar with or those that are totally new to me.

3. Unique - I'm always looking for something a little different from everything else, so when a book promises to be unique, I have to check it out... even if it's for no reason other than to see if it really is that different.

4. Travel - I have some serious wanderlust, but sometimes I can't exactly get away. When this happens, I love to dive into an awesome book full of travel adventure awesomeness. Road-trips, vacations, I'm not too picky about the type of travel, as long as it takes me somewhere far away. Because of this, I've noticed my number of travel books has multiplied... ahem.

5. Boy-Next-Door - I have an immensely huge weakness for the "nice guy" or the "boy-next-door" so it's no surprise that I can't stop myself from snagging a book that promises my fav guy. Let people keep their bad boys, I want someone genuine, sweet and possibly even a bit quirky.

6. Quirky - I'm quirky by nature, so I love when I can read some serious quirk. Quirky character? Yes! Quirky story? Awesome! Quirky quirkiness? Heck yes. Gotta love the quirky!

7. Fairytale - You know how I said I love mythology? Yeah, I'm about as hooked on fairytales. Fairy tales? Fairy-tales? Meh, whatever. I just love them and I fully believe you're never too old to enjoy them.

8. Magic - I have always been in love with magic. I've recently fallen in love with modern/realistic-ish books with a touch of magic, but I've definitely been known to read fantasy like it's going out of style. You can never go wrong with a little magic, right?!

9. Dystopia - I LOVE dystopias, you guys. I've had people look at me funny and ask how I could like such depressing subject matter, especially when I'm usually so happy. My answer is easy. Dystopian stories have a lot of awful things, it's true, but they're also full of hope. They can show the worst in humanity, but also the best. I love the hope and can't get enough of it.

10. Retelling - Um... I've definitely fallen in love, you guys. Whether it be a retelling of a classic story, a different take on mythology or a variation of a fairytale, I HAVE to read it! This is currently my favorite thing to read and I am so happy there are so many to choose from!

Are there any words that draw you to a book? Any certain topics you can't seem to resist? Let me know in the comments below!

  1. I really enjoyed reading your list. I'm totally with you about fairytale and magic being good topics to pick up a book for. I also have a soft spot for retellings and mythology too.

  2. As I have read through your list, I've been reminded that I seem to seek out books with unlikely male romantic interests (unapproachable, difficult, brilliant).

  4. You have a great list here. I have to agree with Mythology and Unique. I love books that stand out from the rest. Magic is another great one, though sometimes I find if the magic isn't done well it can ruin the book.

    1. I couldn't agree more about magic. I have, unfortunately, read some books where it just didn't work. But those are few and far between, so yay!

    1. Have you read the book Melissa has in the picture up there? The Confessions of Georgia Nicolson books are sooo funny I was always gut-laughing every 5 pages or so. She's so weird and absolutely hilarious!

    2. They are! Nothing like laughter to lift ya up, you know? And I 100% agree with Nomi, that series is side-splitting hilarious. :)

  7. I get the same reaction with #9. My husband always says, "How can you read that stuff? It's so dark." Yeah, but it's compelling and, like you said, full of hope. Funny enough, I usually avoid #3, although I'm always complaining about generic plotlines -- hmmm, maybe there's a correlation there??

    1. Haha! Yeah, there might be a bit of correlation. I've been trying to step outside of my box a little bit and I have to say, I've been quite pleasantly surprised lately!

  9. YAY! I love seeing lists that are similar to mine! :) Mythology, fairytales, retellings... ;) I also love travel and quirky - quirky boys, especially, are always beloved by me! (Jason from Meant to Be is basically my favorite quirky boy ever!)

  11. !!! Boy-Next-Door, YES! It's absolutely freshing to see the "nice guy" get the girl. I feel like all the books I read had guys who were charming assholes.

    Here is my top ten!

    1. I know exactly what you mean! Case in point, I've always just hated Jace from City of Bones. I have no idea why anybody would ever like him. Sure I guess he's supposed to be really good-looking or something, but I have a hard time picturing him as such since his whole personality is so crap.

Simon, on the other hand... I find I'm always rooting for Simon to find a girl who can make him forget about Clary (who also isn't the most likeable character IMO, so I guess she and Jace deserve each other). He is such a cutie and always ALWAYS treats a girl the way she ought to be treated. Let's have more boys like that floating around the novelverse why don't we?

    2. I know, right?! I think the nice guys need more love.

Also, I absolutely agree with Nomi... I can't stand Jace (or Clary)!!! PLEASE let there be more nice guys in books!!!
