My Rating: 2 of 5... more like 1 1/2, honestly
Four teenagers are on the verge of exploding. The anxieties they face at every turn have nearly pushed them to the point of surrender: senseless high-stakes testing, the lingering damage of past trauma, the buried grief and guilt of tragic loss. They are desperate to cope, but no one is listening.
So they will lie. They will split in two. They will turn inside out. They will even build an invisible helicopter to fly themselves far away...but nothing releases the pressure. Because, as they discover, the only way to truly escape their world is to fly right into it.
The genius of acclaimed author A.S. King reaches new heights in this groundbreaking work of surrealist fiction; it will mesmerize readers with its deeply affecting exploration of how we crawl through traumatic experience-and find the way out
Having heard a lot of good things about author A. S. King, I was really excited to get a chance to read her newest. I wasn't easily able to understand what this novel was about from the synopsis, but that doesn't usually deter me. So I jumped right in, ready to see what I Crawl Through It was all about.
And I kept wondering what it was about until the last page.
I know, I know. I'm sure there are plenty of people who will love and cherish this book, but for me, I just didn't get it. I found myself often looking up from the book with a "huh" look on my face. I finished the book and asked myself, "What did I just read?" I am all for surreal, unusual, even straight up weird stories, but this one was just not one I enjoyed. I was actually surprised I finished it, to be honest. I think I kept reading it because I wanted to see if it was going to make any sense by the end. For me, it just didn't.
I will honestly say that the writing was wonderful. You can tell the author knows how to craft a sentence and provide vivid imagery for visual readers like myself. But as for the story, like I mentioned before, I just didn't get it. I don't even fully know what to say about I Crawl Through It, making this a very short review. So I put it to all you readers out there: if you "get" this book, please share your insight with me!
