A little about my review style
I will be the first to admit that I am not a writer. I started She Dreams in Fiction as a way to share my love of all things bookish, not to showcase my writing abilities - or lack thereof. As a result of this, my reviews tend to be my thoughts and feelings about the books I read. I read and blog for fun, so I try to review in much the same way. I am also fully aware that I don't have the best grammar or sentence structure. Frankly, this isn't English class. This is a blog that I do for fun. Sometimes I get carried away and I have grammatical flubs all over the place. Oops! I do try, but I'm definitely far from perfect. Like I said, I basically want to share my thoughts about books without worrying so much if I wrote something 100% correct. I know me well enough to know that should this ever feel like a chore, I won't continue blogging for very long... and that would hurt my heart. Anyway, if this doesn't sound like something you're looking for in a reviewer, I definitely won't feel offended if you hop on over to another book blog that may be able to provide you with what you want. If you're still interested in me reviewing your book, thank you! I think you're fantastic!
How can I contact you?
If you ever need to contact me, please do so at my email address: firstname.lastname@example.org. I can also be found on Twitter and Facebook, but I prefer email for review requests. Please note that though I may not accept or respond to every request sent to me, I do read and consider them all.
Do you have any genre preferences?
I read mostly Young Adult and Middle-Grade fiction, with a little bit of regular fiction/literature thrown in, just to spice things up a bit. For a good idea of what I do like to read, either read some of my reviews or check out my Goodreads shelf.
Genres I prefer include:
- Young Adult
- Middle Grade
Genres I don't enjoy/will not read include:
- Romance (though light, clean chick-lit is fine)
- Horror (I'm a wimpy baby...)
- Mystery (typical mysteries, not novels with just a bit of mystery in them... again, mostly because I'm a baby)
- Most non-fiction
- Anything with explicit language or gratuitous sex
What book formats do you accept?
Formats I accept include ARCs, Hardcovers and Paperbacks. I accept some e-books, but not that many. I also don't accept indie/self-published books at this time. This may change in the future, but I've had some unpleasant experiences with them in the past, so I won't be accepting them for the time being.
Is there anything I should include in my review request?
I ask that you at least include the following in your request, please:
- Book Title
- Cover image
What can I expect in your review?
You can definitely expect my honest opinion - yes, that means positive and negative opinions both. I try to share my feelings about the characters, setting, pacing, etc, but every review varies. I will always share the book cover image, format, pages, publisher name, publishing date, title, author, synopsis (from Goodreads, book jacket, etc), and some places to purchase the book (with attached affiliate links). When possible, I will also try to include the book trailer and link to the author/publisher page. I like to share a favorite quote at the end of my reviews, as well as an image of my rating. Also, along with posting a review on my blog, I will post it on Goodreads, Amazon and/or the Book Depository.
How does your rating system work?
My rating system is a teensy tiny bit different from others. I do use the "5 star" method (or currently "buttons" in this case), but my scale is slightly different from the norm. How different, you may ask? Not much, but this is usually what I'm thinking when I rate things:
5 Stars - "Freakin' amazing! A must have!" or "Oh my word! You HAVE to buy this and read it and love it! Right NOW!" (notice the exclamation marks... this is a big deal)
4 Stars - "It's SO good! Read it!" or "I really really liked this. You definitely need to check it out."
3 Stars - "I enjoyed this. Mayhaps you will too!" or "This was good. You should give it a shot."
2 Stars - "Meh. Take it or leave it." or "This book was okay."
1 Star - "I didn't like it. Sad day." or "This book was just not for me."
Note: I will not write reviews on books I DNF (Did Not Finish), as I consider that unfair. It's not fair to review something that I did not complete reading, in my opinion. Therefore, if I decide not to continue reading a book for any reason, I may mark it as DNF on my Goodreads page and that's it. No rating. No review.
Other Information and Disclaimers
If requesting a book from a series that I have yet to read, I ask that you please provide the previous books as well. Please allow at least one month for a review, as life and other obligations do pop up. If you have a specific deadline in mind, please let me know in the request. If I am provided with an ARC, I promise to not sell it. I may offer the ARC in a giveaway, unless I have received a request not to do so. Also in regards to ARCs, I will post a review no earlier than one month before the release date, unless otherwise requested.
