Top Ten Tuesday (10): Books Dealing With Tough Subjects

Last week was difficult because it dealt with books that are light and fun, which was really hard for me to narrow down because I love those kinds of books to bits. This week is difficult because of the complete opposite. The topic for this week is Top Ten Books Dealing With Tough Subjects. I'm not one who likes to read deep, dark, depressing books that deal with tough things like rape, violence, substance abuse or the like. I read to escape, be uplifted, have an adventure, laugh until my stomach aches, etc. It was super tough trying to find ten books I've read that deal with these subjects, but I've somehow managed it... even if I had to stretch a little bit. Ahem.

So, without further ado, here are some books I've read that deal with difficult subjects:

1. Stolen by Lucy Christopher - This book deals with kidnapping, stalking and stockholm syndrome

2. The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky -Tough subjects all around. Drug use, abuse, rape, you name it. (my review)

3. Wake by Lisa McMann - Janie's Mum is an alcoholic, she's barely surviving and she can't stop being sucked into the dreams of others... dreams that are can be harmless and embarrassing or violent and horrific.

4. The Book Thief by Markus Zusak - Nazi Germany, violence, prejudice, death... all extremely rough to read about.

5. Memoirs of a Teenage Amnesiac by Gabrielle Zevin - Maybe not what some people would consider a "tough subject" book, but how would you like to wake up four years after an accident and not remember who you are? I can't even imagine trying to rebuild my life... my identity.

6. Chasing the Dark by Sam Hepburn - Violence, loss, mob/gang interactions... all happening to a fourteen-year-old boy. Tough? I say yes. (my review)

7. Anthem For Jackson Dawes by Celia Bryce - Kids and cancer... I don't even like to think about it. Heartbreaking. (my review)

8. Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson - This one deals with loss and bullying and a few other tough things. The death of a child is never an easy thing.

9. The Outsiders by S. E. Hinton - Gangs, violence, death... this one is a classic, but it's still hard to read about.

10. Number the Stars by Lois Lowry - The holocaust was one of the most horrific things to happen in history. It still shatters me to know stuff like this really happened.

Are there any books you think a chicken like myself will be able to handle? Do you have any favorite tough subject books you love? Let me know in the comments below!
