Things are dire for the inhabitants of Castle Gloom and the surrounding villages. The undead are leaving their graves in droves, a troll army is on the march from the north, and people are mysteriously disappearing from their homes. The people of Gehenna are blaming their misfortunes on Lilith Shadow, their young queen. They believe she has cursed them by using magic, a practice forbidden to women. With her trusty executioner among the missing and her blackguard soldiers busy battling trolls, it is up to Lily and her friend Thorn to root out the real cause of all the trouble. Their search will uncover ugly truths and eventually lead to a nightmarish confrontation with nothing less than the rulership of the realm at stake.

Zombies, ghosts, trolls, dream weavers, a black-hearted villain, and a giant hero bat are only some of the imaginative delights that await readers in Dream Magic by Joshua Khan, a soaring adventure combined with a hair-raising mystery.

There seems to be a trend in my reading these days. I want to read about magic. Whether it be circus illusionists, mind reading, magical creatures, or powerful sorcerers, I want to devour it. When asked if I would be interested in reading the sequel to Shadow Magic, I knew I couldn't resist. I absolutely adored the first book in the Shadow Magic series and I had high expectations going into the second installment. I am so pleased to say that my expectations were not only met, but exceeded! Dream Magic is not only a fabulous sequel to Shadow Magic, but it also has the unique ability to stand on its own.

Dream Magic starts off shortly after the events in the previous book. Rumors are spreading about Lady Shadow and magic, the dead just won't stay in their graves, trolls are wreaking havoc, people are missing - including Castle Gloom's executioner, Tyburn - and Lily and Thorn are in the middle of it all.

I am so pleased the pacing of this novel follows that of the first. It's engaging, quick when it needs to be, and takes its time when the situation calls for it. Joshua Khan keeps the momentum going so seamlessly, I couldn't stop myself from devouring every page. I loved being able to see more of Gehenna, as well as revisiting my favorites from before, such as Castle Gloom. Even within the castle, we got to see more places in this book than we did the first. Gehenna is anything but boring and my imagination had a blast building that world in my mind!

My favorite part by far was getting to see my favorite characters again. I love Thorn, Lily, Hades, and Custard! Lily is overwhelmed with everything currently happening whilst also trying to recover from the epic betrayal of... wait, I don't want to spoil anything, so I'll just leave it there. Lily is a tough cookie. She might have difficulties juggling everything, but even experienced adults would find it difficult to handle what this 13 year old has on her plate. I loved being able to see Lily come into her own a bit more and grow. I am sure she is going to be an amazing ruler! Then there's Thorn. Oh, Thorn. I love this boy! He has so much courage and heart! He is true blue, through and through. He and Lily have a bond that can't be denied, much like his bond with his giant bat, Hades. Thorn's instincts serve him well in all the events taking place throughout Gehenna. If ever there was a hero, that would be Thorn. I am determined to believe there is more to this boy than meets the eye, so I can't wait to see what the third book in the series might reveal about him.

There is so much that happens in this book! I am trying desperately not to reveal any spoilers, but boy, it is hard. At times, I wondered if our heroes would ever be able to overcome the odds and survive everything thrown at them! Troll hordes attacking, crystal spiders infesting, the dead rising in droves. Seriously, how much can happen in one book?! The answer: a lot. You know what, though? Not once did I think it was too much. Joshua Khan is a master storyteller and he has created an immensely imaginative, complex, and entrancing world. I couldn't get enough!

With danger, humor, adventure, and mystery in abundance, Dream Magic is a must-read for bookworms of all ages! If you have yet to jump into the series, I highly recommend grabbing a copy of Shadow Magic as soon as possible. Then, when you're done with that, I am certain you will want to have Dream Magic on hand so you can start it right away. I loved this book so much and I urge you to give this series a read!

JOSHUA KAHN was born in Britain, a land filled with ancient castles, dark forests, and tales of legendary heroes and fantastical monsters. His head stuffed with magical stories, it was inevitable that Joshua would want to create some of his own. Hence Shadow Magic and Dream Magic. Josh lives in London with his family, but he’d rather live in a castle. It wouldn’t have to be very big, just as long as it had battlements.
